Following a lengthy stint creating large scale guerrilla-type public artworks in and around Melbourne, artist Mary Lou Pavlovic is back in the pristine space of the gallery with an exhibition that elegantly tears apart the institution of contemporary art itself.
Pavlovic engages in role-playing to explore the relationship between artists and art institutions. Through her sculptural objects and glossy photographs, she questions the nature of power, cultural trends and the role of the artist in society. Pavlovic pulls no punches with her confronting, and often disturbing, images.

Mary Lou Pavlovic holds a Bachelor of Arts in Painting, from the Canberra Institute of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College, London. She has held solo exhibitions in Australia, Germany and Great Britain, and has been included in important group exhibitions in Australia and overseas. In addition to her exhibition profile, Pavlovic has lectured at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne and throughout the United Kingdom.
In 2002 Pavlovic established her floating art museum PavModern inconjunction with Modular Records. PavModern brought British art critic Matthew Collings to Australia for a series of talks, and in 2004 PavModern hosted the 2004 Jake Chapman Lecture Tour. Pavmodern has also carried out a number of public art projects such as skywriting over the National Gallery of Victoria and putting up posters outside the Ian Potter Centre. These activities were specifically designed to critique museum culture.
